Day zero: make the station safe and repeatable
Read the current manual for cleaning, assembly, water preparation, and first use. Give the hopper and tank access, leave room for the portafilter, and place the machine on a stable dry surface. Confirm the electrical requirements shown for your regional model.
Use the supplied filter basket that matches your beans and experience. Dual-wall baskets can be more forgiving with pre-ground or older coffee; single-wall baskets make grind quality and technique more visible.
Control the inputs
Choose one bean and keep it through the first adjustment cycle. Weigh a repeatable dose if you have a scale, distribute evenly, tamp level, and use the same cup. Record grind setting, dose, beverage output, approximate time, and taste. The notes prevent the common loop of changing several things and learning nothing.
Adjust one variable
If the shot runs very quickly and tastes thin or sharp, move gradually finer. If it chokes or tastes harsh and drying, move gradually coarser. Purge retained grounds after a grinder change as the manual recommends. Do not chase a borrowed internet setting: bean, roast date, environment, and individual grinder calibration vary.
Add milk after espresso is stable
Learn steaming with a consistent milk volume. Purge the wand before use, wipe it immediately after, and purge again. The goal is repeatable texture and safe cleaning, not latte art on day one.
BEFORE YOU BUY
Your four-check decision
- I read the current manual
- I kept one bean and dose
- I changed one variable at a time
- I recorded taste, not only gauge position
