The Barista Express BES870 is more stable as a comparison target: Breville specifies an integrated conical burr grinder, manual removable magnetic tamper, 54 mm portafilter, thermocoil heating, PID temperature control, and manual milk texturing.
Where the work happens
The Barista Express asks the user to distribute and tamp manually. That creates room to improve technique, but also room for inconsistency. De’Longhi describes assisted grinding and tamping on La Specialista models, which can reduce mess and make the routine feel more guided.
Assistance is useful only if it solves the friction you actually dislike. If manual tamping is part of the appeal, extra mechanisms may feel unnecessary. If repeatability and a cleaner puck-prep sequence matter, they may be the reason to choose De’Longhi.
